You may have heard about ketones, but you're not sure how they work exactly.

Today, the weight loss industry is worth a whopping $70 billion dollars. This is what happens when 2 billion people in the world are overweight. Why are all of these people having a hard time losing weight? Perhaps they do not understand the benefits of ketones yet!

Keto diet has been sweeping the nation with incredible results in weight loss and helps reduce other health issues such as epilepsy and diabetes.

But what exactly is a keto diet, and what are the benefits of ketones? Why is it better than other diets out there? What is so different about it?

No need to look any further, we have the full rundown of ketones and the amazing health benefits of the keto diet right here. Read on...

What Are Ketones?

Ketones are water-soluble compounds acting as a form of energy in the body, which satisfy our bodies' energy needs similar to glucose. The downside of glucose for energy is that it spikes insulin levels, leading to fat storage and possibly diabetes. One of the benefits of ketones, however, is that they do not affect blood sugar or insulin levels.

Ketone bodies are produced when the consumption of carbohydrates is very low, this depletes glycogen which produces ketones in the liver from fatty acids. There are three main types of ketone bodies;

  1. Acetone (a breakdown of acetoacetate)
  2. Acetoacetate
  3. Beta-hydroxybutyrate

Ketones defy the myth that carbohydrates are an essential source of energy for the body. In fact, eating more fats puts your body into a fat burning zone and will actually help you lose weight more than restricting your fat intake and relying on carbohydrates.

Essentially, the breaking down of fat produces ketones, providing us with a good source of energy and a slimmer waistline, can it really get any better? It actually does, keep reading.

Ok, Got It. Now, What Is the Keto Diet?

Ketosis is a low carbohydrate, high-fat diet (LFHF) that has been helping people finally achieve the weight loss goals they desire. It is only effective if carbohydrate consumption is below 50 grams per day, or below 100 grams if you are very physically active. It takes about 24 hours for the body to start producing ketones after that.

The Keto diet takes into consideration that we all have an excess fat storage and can rely on it for energy, which is where the ketones come in and make that possible.

The benefits of ketones for weight loss are incredible and definitely work. But please take into consideration this should not be a "lose fat fast" diet. Our bodies are miraculous organisms but are not designed to drop weight that rapidly. It is much more effective to enjoy the process, do check-ins, and make small changes in our fat/carbohydrate levels.

Don't worry, there are still so many delicious recipes that you can indulge in while reaping the benefits of ketones.

The Amazing Health Benefits of Ketones

We now understand how incredible the benefits of ketones are of your body composition, now we will dive into the health benefits

Ketones and Alzheimers Disease

Alzheimer's disease is a severe case of dementia that deteriorates the brain, causing a loss of cognitive function, and eventually, death. Studies have been naming Alzheimer's Disease a possible "Type 3 Diabetes", as researchers feel that it is insulin resistance of the brain.

When our bodies become insulin resistant, it leads to Type 2 diabetes, but when it happens in the brain, it is known as Alzheimer's disease.

Through ketogenesis, the body can produce ketone bodies which become a useful source of energy for the brain and bypasses the brain's deteriorating usage of glucose for energy.

In Alzheimer's disease, the brain has a build-up of plaque called amyloid. Ketones contain a neuroprotective mechanism that blocks the amyloid, which helps prolong the onset of Alzheimer's and leads to more cognitive function.

Increased HDL and Lowered Triglycerides

In order to reduce the risk of high cholesterol, you want a good ratio of higher HDL to lower triglycerides. Studies have shown that this is a much better predictor than measuring your HDL vs LDL.

When we reduce carbohydrates and get into a state of ketosis, this reduces glucose levels, the insulin levels will drop and then the HDL and triglyceride levels improve.

Ketones and Epilepsy

Since the 1920's, doctors have been prescribing the keto diet to patients suffering from epilepsy. This is a great substitute or addition for AED's (anti-epileptic drugs), as most of those drugs cause terrible side effects.

The keto diet has lowered the number of seizures in people who suffer from drug-resistant epilepsy from 22-55%. This may be because of increased mitochondrial energy production in the brain.

Ketones and Mental Health

Now that you know how miraculous the benefits of ketones are for reducing seizures, and prolonging the onset of Alzheimer's disease, you probably see that there are a plethora of other benefits of ketone's for mental health.

Keto diets have been clinically used to help with other mental/brain disorders such as;

  • Parkinson's disease
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • ALS
  • Chronic headaches
  • Bi-Polar Disorder
  • Schizophrenia

The clinical use of keto diets for mental disorders has been used for over 200 years, but there are studies that it even dates back to 400AD with Hippocrates. The article "The Current Status of the Ketogenic Diet in Psychiatry" talks in depth about the benefits of ketones for the management of mental health.

More About The Benefits of Ketones

The benefits of ketones go far beyond the weight loss and energy improving benefits. Ketogenesis has been clinically used for hundreds of years to help the lives of many people.
