Why Should I Take Exogenous Ketones?

Why Should I Take Exogenous Ketones?
Authored By Alex Millet 0 Comment(s)

This is a loaded question, which has a lot of answers. There are many benefits of exogenous ketones, but because we are all built so differently, and our lifestyles require different needs, your approach to taking exogenous ketones is going to vary. A man, who is morbidly obese, and is considering the ketogenic diet and exogenous ketone supplements to lose weight, is going to approach this question differently as compared to an endurance athlete.

In the end, the best thing you can do is follow the n=1 formula.

N= sample size

1= number of participants

This means to experiment on yourself.

So, give exogenous ketone supplements, along with a ketogenic diet, a try, for at least 60 days, and see how you feel.

If I am not yet fat-adapted, what are the benefits of exogenous ketones?

Exogenous ketone supplements are best known for helping you avoid the keto flu. The keto flu occurs when you are just starting out on the keto diet, and your body has not yet made the switch between glucose and ketones as your primary fuel source. It doesn't feel good. You feel lethargic, you may have headaches, and flu-like symptoms. But by taking exogenous ketone supplements, such as Kegenix PRIME, you can avoid this all together, because the ketones in your blood stream will signal that stored fat is now available to be used as fuel.

On the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, Dom D'Agostino, Ph.D., an expert in researching the ketogenic diet, says,

"I don't tell everybody they should eat ketogenic, but I definitely say that they should at least go into ketosis a couple times a year. If not for just longevity effects, for anti-inflammatory effects."

If you don't plan on following the ketogenic diet, there are still benefits of exogenous ketones taken a couple times a year. Exogenous ketones and the ketogenic diet combined with intermittent fasting has many benefits, as it has been show to suppress viral illnesses.

What is the point of taking exogenous ketone supplement if I am already fat-adapted?

This is a great question, because most know that Kegenix PRIME is great for kick-starting your ketogenic journey, but why would you continue to take it once you are in a constant state of ketosis?

Kegenix PRIME can speed up your weight loss, and give you an extra edge before any kind of a stressful event.  Mark Sisson, author of The Keto Reset and The Primal Blueprint, has been living a low-carb lifestyle, and has been fat-adapted for years. He recently tried exogenous ketones. Here is what he has noticed.

"About half the time I’ll take ketones right before Sunday Ultimate Frisbee matches. It provides a discernible extra burst of speed during the game, more overall energy (I just feel like “going” more), and less soreness the next day. I speculate that my ability to hit higher performance levels without dipping as deep into anaerobic territory is less stressful overall on my body, so I recover more quickly and with less pain.

There’s also the potential for ketones being anti-inflammatory. Sure enough, exogenous ketones seem to have an anti-inflammatory effect, suppressing expression of an inflammasome involved in various disease states. Some research shows that blocking the inflammasome by deleting the gene responsible for it protects against arthritis in rodents. If the same is true for humans using ketones, that—along with my increased intake of collagen—might explain why I’ve made a strong recovery from serious Achilles’ tendinosis."

Mark uses exogenous ketones to give him an extra boost before athletic activities, as well as a supplement to help him recover faster, and for the anti-inflammatory effects.

Dom D'Agostino says that the ketogenic diet, with ketone supplementation, has been shown to aid in wound healing, which is fascinating. This is especially evident in diabetic wounds, as diabetics tend to have ischemic wounds, meaning lack of blood flow and oxygen to the woundWhen ketosis was induced, blood flow to the wound increased by 30-40%!

There are many incredible benefits of a ketogenic diet combined with intermittent fasting. If you have been following the keto diet for a couple of months, you have noticed the natural appetite suppression, and I'm sure you have loved it. Supplementing with Kegenix PRIME can help you extend your intermittent fasts. Mark Sisson had this to say about his fasting experience that lasted 48 hours.

"I recently did another long fast of over two days. Prior to ketone usage, two days was really rough. I could do it, but I wasn’t happy. This time using a small dose of ketones throughout the first day really helped me through the rough patches. In fact, those rough patches never came. 48 hours was a relative breeze."

If I am an athlete, what are the benefits of exogenous ketones on my performance?

This really depends on the athlete. For athletes who are primarily endurance based, (cyclists, ironman, marathons) exogenous ketones, alongside a ketogenic diet, can provide you with a near-never ending fuel source. Whereas, glucose, can only be stored in limited amounts, in the liver, and the muscles, requiring frequent bouts of refueling.

Transitioning can be rough on your training performance initially though. Dom D'Agostino averages that it can take about 6 weeks to get your performance back to baseline. At about 12 weeks though, you could be breaking new PRs.

For football players, research is still in the early stages, but there is growing evidence that exogenous ketones could be helpful to give to players who have concussion injuries. Especially immediately after they occur. It could help reduce inflammation in the brain. We will be watching those studies very closely, because we love football in this house!

What about athletes who train in a HIIT (high intensity interval training) format, such as MMA fighters, for example?

The body is really adaptable to switching fuel sources. You could add some slow carbs in just prior to your workout, such as a sweet potato, and that may help. You need to give it a real shot though for this type of sport. Your performance will suffer for a while before it improves, so it would be best to implement this during the off season.  It takes a minimum of 3 months, up to 6 months, to properly assimilate. The more you follow it, the more benefits you receive at the cellular level. And Kegenix PRIME can help you power through the tough times of this transition.

How can exogenous ketones help my mental performance?

  • You will no longer desire to take naps.
  • You will have no brain fog. In fact, your brain will be sharper than ever before. Which will give you a performance boost, at school, at work, at home, wherever.
  • Your appetite is suppressed, meaning less time eating. That can allow you to get more work done!

"Every millimolar of Beta-hydroxybutyrate that’s in your blood, it's been estimated, gives your brain a 10% boost in energy."

-Dom D'Agostino, Ph.D.

How can I use exogenous ketones to lose weight?

Kegenix PRIME and a ketogenic diet, combined with intermittent fasting is a hugely beneficial, and efficient, way to lose weight. Especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

The best part is that you DO NOT FEEL DEPRIVED

 It is important that you count your macros if you are trying to lose weight, because you could easily polish off a bowl of nuts. A half cup of almonds are 413 calories! And an over-abundance of calories can keep the weight on. I use My Fitness Pal, which is a free app where you can customize your macro goals. It is very user friendly.

Everyone is so different, but there are amazing benefits of exogenous ketones. Please let us know how you use the Kegenix products in your life!
