Three of our favorite things!

 

Here at Kegenix we were so excited to hear about Dr. Dom's recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience. We're all fans of both, so to see them discuss Kegenix's benefits was really cool! 

In the podcast, Dr. Dominic D’Agostino and Joe Rogan discuss the potential benefits of ketones and exogenous ketone supplements. Dr. Dominic believes that exogenous ketones (BHB), should be considered a fourth macronutrient, a calorie-containing energy source just as carbohydrates, fat, and protein are as well.

We thought this was an interesting point, so we asked one of our developers his thoughts on this:

"When we eat food they are called macronutrients. The three common macronutrients are fat, protein, and carbohydrates. The body further breaks those macronutrients down into components the body can use as building blocks and fuel. For instance, carbohydrates break down into glucose for fuel, proteins into amino acids for building blocks and fat into fatty acids and glycerol for storage when the body has plenty of glucose. However, when the body is at a calorie deficit in the absence of glucose, fat then breaks down into this high powered molecule called a ketone. Ketones don’t occur naturally from the food we eat. Instead, ketones produced in the liver as part of a biological process to help us cope with calorie deficits and during starvation. So when we don’t have enough fuel from carbohydrates, the body starts breaking fat down and converting it into ketones to make up the calories the body requires. The only bad thing about ketones is they don’t generally appear until the body has depleted its other source of fuel, glucose and then requires the breakdown of fat into ketones.

Its because of this unique metabolic process that some scientist are calling ketones a "fourth macronutrient" because it has all the characteristics of a macronutrient, it just isn’t something that you can eat…but contains all the power needed to power the body."

Pretty neat stuff! Seeing ketones that way makes you really understand the true benefits of running on fat for fuel as opposed to glucose!
