Slow-Cooked Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich

Serves 4

We took a classic recipe, made it low carb and we’re loving every bite! Sirloin, onion, mushroom, garlic and green bell pepper is slow-cooked in bone broth and layered with provolone cheese in a soft and perfectly golden French roll, yum!

French Roll Prep Time: 10 minutes
French Roll Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Philly Cheesesteak Prep Time: 5 minutes
Philly Cheesesteak Slow-Cooking Time: 6 hours on LOW heat or 4 hours on HIGH heat


Philly Cheesesteak Filling:
1 tablespoon butter
1 medium yellow onion, peeled & minced
1 pound of chopped sirloin
4 cloves of garlic, peeled & minced
1 green bell pepper, sliced
1 cup cremini mushrooms, diced
2 cups keto-friendly beef bone broth
1 tablespoon coconut aminos
1 teaspoon sea salt
½ teaspoon cracked black pepper
6 slices of provolone cheese
French Rolls:
3 large eggs
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1 cup shredded gruyere cheese
4 tablespoons plain cream cheese
1 ½ cups almond flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon sea salt


Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

To make the keto buns, melt shredded cheese and cream cheese in a microwave-safe bowl and stir very well to combine.

Mix 2 eggs, almond flour, baking powder and sea salt in a large mixing bowl, making sure there are no clumps.

Pour in melted cheese and stir well to combine.

Form 2 rectangles with your hands and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Flatten a bit with your hand.

Bake in the oven for 10 minutes, then brush the tops of the rolls with the remaining egg, then bake 10 more minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing in half and filling the Philly cheesesteak mixture and sliced provolone cheese.

To make the filling, add all Philly cheesesteak ingredients to a slow-cooker and cook on LOW heat for 6 hours or 4 hours on HIGH heat.

When done, use a slotted spoon to scoop out the meat mixture into a separate bowl.

Serve between French rolls buns, with sliced provolone cheese.

Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
